Atheism, the null-hypothesis.

Example 1:
Identify hypothesis: Is Drug A more efficient than Drug B?
Null hypothesis (Ho): Efficiency of Drug A = Efficiency of Drug B (one-tailed)
Alternative hypothesis (Ha): Efficiency of Drug A > Efficiency of Drug B
Findings: Test statistic falls in the non-rejection region
Decision: Do not reject Ho
Conclusion: We have no evidence at the given significance level that Ha is true

Example 2:
Identify hypothesis: Does God exist?
Null hypothesis (Ho): There is no God
Alternative hypothesis (Ha): There is a God
Findings: No evidence to suggest Ha
Decision: Do not reject Ho
Conclusion: We have no evidence to suggest that Ha is true

So then, atheism is the null-hypothesis.  The burden of proof lies with the positive claim, and to demand negative proof is to commit a fairly serious logical fallacy.
